We had such a great time at her
place last year, that we are going to do it all again! In fact we are also
adding a second workshop which concentrates especially on COLOR.
That is really the best way to enhance your ability to see and mix and use color
very quickly. It will also allow me to spend more time this year on
other aspects of Portraiture, such as lighting, posing and characterization and
even some more about the business of Portraiture if you'd like to.
We are coming back earlier this year. I will be there in late August this time.
See the specific dates below.
If you have not seen it yet, the Spring issue of Workshop Magazine
has an article on my workshops.
You will see below that we are offering the COLOR workshop at a lower price than
the Portrait one. By its nature we can allow a couple more people into the class
because the set up does not take up as much room.
We are offering a special price for anyone wishes
to participate in BOTH the Color and Portrait Painting workshop at Bobbi's
place.
And in addition, because I like to reward loyalty and always enjoy teaching
those I've taught before, we are offering a special price to only you. You can
subtract $25. from the normal price. That means the price is $50 less than
the combined price below if you wish to take both. This special price for you is
good through April 1st. I will be announcing these workshops on my website in a
few days and then on FB too. If you want to be a part of it let me know as soon
as possible.
Hope one or both of these will fit into your plans. It would be fun if we just
did it all again with the same great group!

In August of 2010 Thomas Nash will be returning to Fair Oaks CA to conduct two workshops, one focusing on COLOR and one on PORTRAIT PAINTING. Each will be three days long.
The COLOR WORKSHOP will occur first,
to allow anyone who wishes to participate in both the benefit of learning about
seeing, mixing and using color before tackling Portraiture.
The DATES are:
COLOR WORKSHOP: Aug 20-22
PORTRAIT WORKSHOP: Aug 23-25
LOCATION
Both workshops will be held in the personal studio of artist Bobbi Baldwin at:

wishes to participate in both.
The fee for the Three Day Thomas Nash COLOR workshop Aug 20- 22 is $395.

Some of the teaching aids Tom uses for teaching about COLOR
For the COLOR workshop, most of your MATERIALS and SUPPLIES will be PROVIDED.
We are trying something new this year with the COLOR workshop. Most of the supplies you will need will be provided for you. You don't need to bring a palette or paint or palette knives. You will also be given some panels to paint on, which of course you will keep at the end of the workshop. You can bring your own brushes and a brush washer and paper towels. More details will be forthcoming, as we get closer.
Tom has found that working with OIL PAINT is the best media to use when studying
color. By providing the paint needed for the class, any artist who up to
now has concentrated on acrylic or pastel or even watercolor won't find
themselves suddenly making a large investment in many new colors all at once.
THE PORTRAIT PAINTING WORKSHOP:
The fee for The Three Day Thomas Nash PORTRAIT PAINTING workshop Aug 23-25 is $495.

A materials list will be sent to those participating in the portrait workshop. Artists will be expected to bring their own palettes, brushes and paints. Easels and taborets will be provided for both the COLOR and PORTRAIT PAINTING workshops at Bobbi's studio where they are being held.
For those artists wishing to participate for all six days and take BOTH the COLOR and the PORTRAIT workshop, the fee is $795. a savings of $100.
A payment to hold a place in either workshop is $150. The balance will be due on or before July 20, 2010.
Nash Studio accepts Visa and Master Card as well as checks.

with an hour off for lunch. There will be one Portrait demo during the portrait
workshop and hand-outs and slide presentations during both.
MORE ABOUT THE COLOR WORKSHOP:
The Thomas Nash COLOR workshop is a unique and valuable learning experience for artists of all levels. It is designed so that artists will come away with a sharply increased ability to see, understand, mix and paint the colors before them. Participants will become intimately familiar with the possibilities and limitations of their various paints and the principles of using them to create any color they want quickly and easily. Tom will demonstrate and explain multiple approaches to mixing and using color. He will strip away the mystery behind the famous Henry Hensche way of dealing with color and also show how something as scientific sounding as the Munsell system can be made a useful addition to an artists repertoire. The artists will create simple paintings with what they learn during class.
Samples of Topics Covered:
The four special pitfalls to be aware of when mixing color.
The pros and cons of the various ways to neutralize a color.
Cross mixing on the color wheel to control your color mixtures precisely.
Strings of color: Creating useful assortments of premixed colors based on what you see, rather than by formulas.
Multiple ways to mix the same color and why you might use one or the other in a given situation.
The benefits and drawbacks of a limited palette
The benefits and drawbacks of a very extensive palette
Dealing with the range of paint compared to light, how artists have handled that historically.
Why you might select a given color or value key in a given situation.
Why and how realistic painters can paint very differently from one another and still capture an authentic affect.
MORE ABOUT THE PORTRAIT WORKSHOP:
Participants will paint from the live model for approximately 15 hours during the three day event. A demo of two hours or more plus multiple slide presentations and class lectures will fill the other 6 hours.
Samples of Topics Covered:
Understanding what the figure is doing.
Understanding what the light is doing and how it affects what is seen.
Characterization and Portraiture, what separates a portrait from a good head study.
Keys to getting a likeness every time.
Posing and lighting the model based upon what you wish to express about them.
Procedure to build your portrait solidly and sensitively.
The human form, anatomy, planes, volumes, seeing them, painting them.
Much more
